Here is a list of the Computer Museums that I contacted:
- The National Museum of Computing, Bletchley Park
- Museum of Computing, Swindon
- ICE Scotland Museum, Heriot-Watt
- National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh
- Museum of Communication, Burntisland
- Centre for Computing History, Cambridge
- Science Museum, London
- Derby Computer Museum, Derby
- The Computer Sheds, York
- North West Computer Museum, Leigh
- Retro Computer Museum, Leicester
- History of Computing Collection, Swansea
- Timeline Computer Archive, Wigton
- National Videogame Museum, Sheffield
- The Micro Museum, Ramsgate
After asking those which expressed an interest to identify which items they really wanted, I made the following allocations:
The Computer Sheds, York: S100.
This is more a repository rather than a museum. It is run by Prof Jim Austin and is located in the countryside a few miles out of York; it contains a huge range of computers including some large mainframes. Alex and I dropped off the S100 system on our way south in July 2024.
Derby Computer Museum, Derby: Macintosh Classic II, Apple II , Atari Mega ST2, Atari monitor.
This couldn’t be more different from The Computer Sheds. It’s a hands-on museum in the centre of Derby with a large range of home computers, most of which are running games programs. We delivered the kit the next day.
History of Computing Collection, Swansea: Nascom, Atari 1040 STF.
We didn’t get a chance to visit as it was a bit out of our way to France so the kit was packaged up and sent by courier.
